Honda Amaze diesel launched in India will have the best mileage figure

Honda-AmazeHonda’s first Indian diesel sedan, the Amaze, is all set for launch on April 11, 2013. With a 1.5 litre i-DTEC engine under its hood, the entry level sedan will deliver what every Indian wants from his automobile- high mileage. Reportedly, Amaze is set to cause a stir by delivering class-leading fuel efficiency of 25.8 kmpl. Prior to this, the most fuel efficient vehicle in the country was Chevrolet Beat Diesel, with a mileage of 25.44 kmpl.

Though petrol vehicles from Honda are also known to deliver high mileage, the new Amaze may take the mileage war to a new level. To achieve this feat, engineers at Honda used a thin-walled aluminium engine block, along with an aluminium head and light cast-iron cylinders. In addition, engineers have also opted for open deck construction for weight saving, which is a contrast to the stronger closed deck construction that is usually followed for aluminium-based diesel engines.

Honda-Amaze-Modulo-Kit-7If this is not enough, there are some more measures which have helped this engine achieve high mileage. Honda’s lubricant partner, Idemitsu has developed a special ultra-low viscosity engine oil that helps in enhancing mileage. Engineers at Honda have also put in lot of effort to reduce the friction in diesel engines, which was previously achieved with the company’s petrol motors. One example of the above mentioned measure is the use of thinner and shorter piston skirts. Similarly, other measures have also been used which in total, result in a superb 40 per cent reduction of friction at engine speeds of 1500 rpm. Experts indicate that diesel engines are normally known to spin at the above mentioned speed.
Though the company claims that its Amaze sedan will deliver 25.8 kmpl mileage, it is possible that the real world figures could be lower. But then the figures for vehicles such as Chevrolet Beat diesel, Tata Nano (25.4 kmpl) and Indica CR4 (25 kmpl) have also been recorded through the same procedure, which implies that they can be compared at the same level.

amazeFigures disclosed in this article are the ones recorded in the Indian Driving Cycle (IDC), which are exaggerated due to ideal conditions. Through the IDC platform, auto companies voluntarily disclose the mileage of their vehicles. The test for this is done in a cycle that last for 1,140 seconds and covers 10 km, which refers to an average speed of 31.6 kmph. This cycle involves a high degree of Start-Stop and very little engine revving. A common driving technique of using higher gears is also followed here. However, all tests are done without turning on the air conditioner, which again means that real world figures would not be the same. But the same time, IDC figures serve as a standard reference point for all vehicles.

Coming back to the Honda Amaze, competition in the entry level segment is surely heating up and with this impending launch, while the quality of vehicles in this class is expected to go a notch higher. One hopes that Honda Cars India achieves the same success with diesel vehicles, as it has achieved with petrol offering.

The New SX4 promises to take on the segment with a refreshed approach

Maruti_SX4Maruti Suzuki’s SX4 is one vehicle that has not received its well-deserved share of success in the industry. Due to stiff competition in the segment, SX4 sedans lost out to rivals with newer models, such as Hyundai Verna, Honda City and Volkswagen Vento. For this reason, the top Indian car manufacturer has decided to revamp the SX4 with several cosmetic changes. However, the new version would not be headed towards India in the near future, but at a later date.
Engine capacities for the new SX4 have not been altered. While the 1.3 litre Multijet diesel is being used to generate 89 bhp of maximum power, its petrol variant produces 104 bhp of power through a 1.6 litre VVT engine. Powertrains have been tweaked a bit to improve fuel efficiencies- the diesel variant returns a mileage of 21.79 kmpl, while the petrol gives 16.51 km to the litre. Maruti also has a CNG variant which gives a class-leading mileage of 22.1 km per kilo of gas.

2011-Suzuki-SX4-2Despite the changes, what is interesting to note is that new SX4 prices have not been affected. The petrol version of the new SX4 would still be available between Rs. 7.38 lakh and Rs. 8.84 lakh. Similarly, the diesel variant is priced from Rs. 8.27 lakh- Rs. 9.79 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi)

The Tata Pixel.

Video

Tata Motors presents Tata Pixel, a new city car concept for Europe. Based on the Tata Nano, the Tata Pixel — at just over three metres in length , is the most package efficient four-seater in the world, comfortably accommodating four adults, unlike a typical city car which is either a two-seater or can accommodate two adults and two children only.
The Tata Pixel’s ability to manoeuvre and park in the tightest of spaces is made possible by its Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT), which assists rotation of the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards, while the front wheels turn at acute angles. The result is a turning circle radius of just 2.6 metres.
The ‘scissor’ doors rotate upwards from the front to allow passengers to effortlessly enter or exit the Tata Pixel, even in the tightest of spaces.A 1.2 litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, positioned at the rear of the Tata Pixel, gives lively performance. The engine is a low-friction design, featuring variable coolant and oil pump and rapid warm-up technologies. With optimised aerodynamic drag, low rolling-resistance tyres, stop-start technology, and intelligent battery charging, the Tata Pixel returns European combined cycle (NEDC) fuel economy of 3.4 l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 89g/km.A forward sweeping roofline, with minimal front and rear overhangs, accentuates the youthful styling. The Tata Pixel is also designed to provide a high level of connectivity. Key functions are controlled by the driver’s smart phone, running ‘My Tata Connect’ — the first integrated human-machine interface (HMI) concept from Tata Motors.

galaxy tab banned in US

Samsung has lost its attempt to overturn a ban on US sales of its flagship Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer, in a fresh blow for the South Korean manufacturer in its patent war with Apple.

A judge in California on Monday refused to lift the ban – which came into force last week – while the court weighs up Apple’s claim that Samsung illegally copied the design of the iPad.A spokeswoman for Samsung on Tuesday said the company would continue to appeal against the injunction.

Apple and Samsung are involved in patent disputes in several countries around the globe, in a row that has moved front and centre in the battle for the increasingly crowded tablet market.

Samsung was ordered on 26 June to halt US sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 – one of the closest competitors to the iPad – until the South Korean firm goes to trial with Apple on 30 July. The US district judge Lucy Koh also hit Samsung with a US sales ban for its top-end Galaxy Nexus smartphone on Friday.

Samsung said in a statement: “Samsung is disappointed with the court’s decision that denied our motion to stay. We believe today’s ruling will ultimately reduce the availability of superior technological features to consumers in the US.

“Regardless, we will continue to pursue a request for an appeal of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 preliminary injunction, which we filed on 26 June to the court of appeals for the federal circuit.”

“The impact on Samsung is limited as shipment volume of Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Nexus are quite small,” Lee Sun-tae, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities, told Reuters.

“Even if Apple wins an injunction request on Galaxy S III, Samsung will have plenty of time to get around it, as it normally takes quite a long time for a court to process such requests.”

Total sales of tablet computers will reach 105m units this year and 143m in 2013, according to the research firm IDC – compared with total PC sales of about 400m, of which more than 60% will be laptops.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab range of tablet computers run Google’s Android software, which is also used by a range of rival manufacturers including Sony and Motorola.

Apple is expected to remain the dominant player in the tablet market for the foreseeable future, with Gartner forecasting that the iPad will account for 61.4% of all sales this year. Android tablets are forecast to account for 31.9% of tablet computer sales this year.
